The Catahoula Cur is also known as the Catahoula Leopard Dog and is the official canine of Louisiana. It was developed by the first settlers of Louisiana to be used for hunting and driving livestock to slaughter. It is a very versatile dog. It can be a working dog and also a pet.

Appearance:

Some of the notable features in Catahoula Cur are its eyes and coat color. It has distinctive eyes colored blue, green, brown or amber. It has a striking, short and sleek to medium length coat that can be spotted, patched, brindle or solid.

Temperament:

Catahoula Cur is affectionate, alert, courageous, loyal, protective, energetic and smart. It needs way to be relaxed through at least an hour of running exercises everyday. It doesn’t like being alone and loves to play and herd children. It could follow hand signals and short commands. If he is raised with other pet animals, he can get along well with them. It has high level of endurance and ability to lead in terrains and could be a good hiking companion.

Health:

The Catahoula is generally healthy but are prone to deafness and hip dysplasia. To extend its life, appropriate weight should be maintained to avoid obesity.
